2002 The First Fifty
The first fifty members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame were formally inducted on St Andrew’s Day 2002. The Royal Museum in Edinburgh was crammed to the rafters with great champions as fifty glittering careers were celebrated in a ceremony conducted by another Scottish sporting stalwart – Dougie Donnelly. First Minister Jack McConnell led the tributes, and Sir Jackie Stewart spoke movingly about the shared commitment to promote sport in every part of Scottish Society.
Among the lucky fifty who made the cut were Denis Law, Jimmy Johnstone, Gavin Hastings, David Wilkie, Allan Wells, Ken Buchanan and Sir Chay Blyth. All of them accepted their awards in person and made the event a real celebration of our nation’s sporting success over the last two hundred years.
