An English cricket captain from Scotland! Denness made over 25,000 runs in his career, captained England in 19 out of 28 Test matches and hit four Test centuries. Denness learned to play cricket in Ayr. His house was on the boundary of a cricket pitch. He won the first of ten Scottish caps in 1959. He joined Kent in 1962, going on to captain the side and winning several trophies. He joined Essex in 1977 and enjoyed similar success. Denness played his first game for England against New Zealand at the Oval during the Third Test in 1969.
