Scotland's first Olympic medal winner! Elliot was from an old Scottish Borders family. He was a popular competitor at the first 'Modern Olympic Games' in Athens, Greece, in 1896. He won a gold medal at the one-handed lift, a silver medal at the two-handed lift and came fourth in the Greco-Roman wrestling. He was also popular off the field; his fans in Athens included the Crown Prince of Greece and a lady who proposed to him!
