Scotland does not have much of a table tennis tradition, but Helen Elliott Hamilton, overcame this hinderance to win the Ladies World Doubles championship not once but twice. When she won her first title in 1949, she and her Hungarian partner Gizi Farkas started as favourites. But her second win - with a new partner, the Englishwoman Dora Beregi - was wholly against the odds. She then spent many years developing the game in Scotland, and has served in many national and international Table Tennis organisations.
