'Captain Barclay' was one of the strongest men of his time, famous for his amazing walking feats. In 1801, the 'Celebrated Pedestrian' walked ninety miles in just over twenty hours for 5,000 guineas. In 1809, he went even further and walked one mile each hour for a thousand hours. 'Captain Barclay' was also a well-known boxing trainer. In 1807 and 1808 his pupil, Tom Cribb, was bare knuckle Champion of the World.
- Twice a week he would walk 51 miles to Turriff, cover a further 20 miles exercising his pack of hounds and then walk 51 miles back home
