Gordon Smith

 Gordon Smith

(1924-2004)
Association Football

Inducted in 2003

Some say that Gordon Smith was as good as the legendary English winger, Stanley Matthews. Everyone else says that he was even better. He was capable of incredible trickery with a football and made his name as part of the 'Famous Five' forward line that helped steer Hibernian FC to the top of the Scottish game in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Later in his career he won the league with Heart of Midlothian and Dundee, taking them to the European cup for the first time - and so far the last.

  • Won 18 Scotland caps - including two as captain
  • Made over 500 appearances (in all competitions) for Hibernian, scoring 364 times - a club record
  • In one game alone for Hibernian, an 8-0 rout of Third Lanark, he scored five goals
  • Five League Championship badges, three won with Hibernian and one each with Heart of Midlothian and Dundee
