Jock Stein, CBE
(1922-1985)
Association Football
Inducted in 2002
Stein's playing career with Albion Rovers, Llanelli and Celtic was unremarkable. His career as a manager was different. Stein initially coached Celtic reserves. He moved to revitalise the fortunes of Dunfermline Athletic and Hibernian and returned to Celtic in 1965. Celtic enjoyed a glorious spell under Stein. They dominated in Scotland, winning nine League titles in a row from 1965 to 1974. They were also successful in Europe - in 1967 they became the first British club to lift the European Cup. Stein's 61-match career as the Scotland manager came to a tragic end in Cardiff in 1985. He died at the end of Scotland's World Cup Qualifying victory against Wales, ensuring the Scottish team's qualification for the 1986 World Cup.
