HRH The Princess Royal launches fundraising campaign for the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame - December 2002

HRH The Princess Royal is to launch the fundraising campaign for the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame at the Museum of Scotland on Thursday 5th December.

Following the announcement of the 50 inductees at a ceremony last Saturday (30 November), funds are now needed to create the permanent gallery which will feature their names and celebrate their sporting achievements. The National Museums of Scotland and sportscotland are hoping to raise at least £300,000 towards the creation of the gallery, which will feature photographs, footage and objects (sporting memorabilia) relating to the 50 inductees.

On Thursday HRH The Princess Royal, a patron of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, will meet with representatives from the National Museums of Scotland and sportscotland, as well as inductees including Louise Aitken Walker (rally driver), John Greig (footballer) Alister Allan (rifle shooter), Andy Irvine (rugby player), and Sir Peter Heatly (diver). During her visit, the Princess Royal will see some of the objects (items) which have already been donated for inclusion in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

Colin McCallum, Director of Marketing and Development at the National Museums of Scotland, said: ‘We hope that many people will want to become involved in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, whether by making a donation or becoming founder. It is an exciting chance to become part of Scotland’s sporting history and help create a lasting tribute to Scotland’s sporting heroes and heroines.’

Visitors can have a taster of some of the exhibits which will be included in the permanent gallery, with the display of two special exhibition cases in Hawthornden Court in the Museum of Scotland from Thursday.
